HoneyTV sits down with La La to talk about her new movie with 50 cent, new reality show, her production company and life as a mom.
Alani "Lala" Vazquez isn't the one to live in the shadows of anyone else's fortune and fame. Lala is very confident in her own talents and is very adamant about making a name of her own. No stranger to Hollywood, Lala has a career that has expanded well over a decade. Lala continues to blaze her own trail and has proven time and time again that she has staying power. As Lala ventures into new territory, there's no doubt that much success will come her way.
Onetta: You have had a successful career that has spanned over a decade. When it comes to your career, what accomplishments are you most proud of?
Lala: I'm definitely proud of the fact that I am able to be in a position to be a role model or inspire young women who want to be in the radio/tv/film business. I get the most joy out of talking to young women, telling them my story, and hopefully inspiring them to be better and inspiring them to reach for the stars! That to me is really the best part of all his.
Born in New York and raised in Atlanta, Alani "Lala" Vazquez embodied the definition of determination at an early age. She landed herself a radio internship as a young teenager and quickly moved up the ladder to radio host in both Atlanta and Los Angeles. From radio she ventured over to television and became a well known and respected MTV Host. Now she and her business partners have created a production company and Lala continues to work on screen hosting TV shows as well as dabbling in the film world. Taking on the roles of producer, star and mother, Lala has proven to be the ultimate multi-tasker. She continues to create more opportunities for herself by getting involved in different aspects of the entertainment industry, all while exhibiting a sense of beauty, class and style.
Looking back at the Lala that we were first introduced to on MTV, there has been an apparent evolution in her style, which she calls only natural. "I've become more girly and into more fashion...where in the past that was never me." Lala now finds herself being more interested in the latest fashion trends but doesn't classify her style as one in particular. Like most women, her style depends on her mood. "It's a mix, one day I could be chic, another day I could be 'glammed' up. I mean it kind of just depends on what I'm feeling." Lala's personal pictures on her new website iamlala.com show her diverse taste in style and fashion, where you can see her on the red carpet or on a day out with her son.
LaLa Vazquez always has her eye on the prize. A former MTV VJ, she's known for being the reality show hostess with the mostess, manning the mike on shows like "I Love New York," "Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School," and "For the Love of Ray J."
She also relishes her role as a producer. With a producer credit on "Tyson" (the acclaimed Mike Tyson documentary) under her belt, Vazquez is focused on developing new projects with her company, Krossover Entertainment. "I'm staying busy for sure! We are starting the process of working on the Roberto Clemente life story. I also produce a few reality shows with different networks. We have one with 51 Minds entertainment ('Rock of Love,' 'I Love Money,' 'Flavor of Love') called 'The Six Man,' where we are looking for a basketball player who has the skills and the mentality to be in the NBA. We can't promise them a spot in the NBA, but they'll get with a major sports agent who will help them get in the NBA."
La La Vazquez is keeping it real this year--well, reality TV anyway.
First up for La La is VH1's "Charm School Gives Back." While we're used to seeing La La host reunion specials, this time, she's going to be one of the deans. She'll be working with Rock DJ Stryker and former talk show host Ricki Lake, who is the headmistress this time around. (Personally, we were hoping Mo'nique would come back.)
This season marks the first time that VH1 has combined casts from two different shows for "Charm School." Girls from "Rock of Love Bus With Brett Michaels" and "Real Chance at Love" will be going head-to-head while acting on their best behavior.
According to La La time in the house wasn't always a tea party. When things got heated between contestants, there was no way the judges didn't know about it. La La told us that they were in house "all day, every single day." That means the girls couldn't be slick and try to cover up an argument.
LaLa gives up the goods on her golden nugget, Carmelo Anthony.
You have an upcoming VH1 reality show, The Sixth Man. What keeps you in the game? You've got 80 million reasons to put it on cruise control.
I never wanted to just have a baby, be with an NBA player and do nothing. I've always maintained my relationships in business. When people start asking, "Where's LaLa?" the response is usually, "Oh, she isn't doing shit." That's never going to happen over here.
Props for that. The rigors of an NBA season can be brutal. How do you help
Carmelo cope after a tough loss?
We'll talk about it and I'll be as supportive as I can. I'll tell him, "You got another game to prove yourself. You're only as good as your last game." Sometimes, though, you know when it's best not to say anything.
Who's the player he'd most likely want to call out sick against?
[Laughs] You'll never get him to admit it, but I know that when he comes home, the players he's most sore from are Matt Harping [Utah Jazz] and Bruce Bowen [San Antonio Spurs]. Whenever he gets home, he's black and blue.
Speaking of the Spurs, Eva Longoria gets maximum facetime during hubby Tony Parker's games. What gives?
Eva Longoria is a friend of mine. I love her to death. Obviously she's hot and popular right now, and they want to capitalize off that. Plus, the Spurs are always kicking ass; they always do well against the Nuggets. I think all of those factors add up. We're always joking about whose man is better.
Why don't you two settle the rivalry on the court? The Parkers versus the Anthonys!
[Laughs] Of course Melo and I would win that. We got height over those shrimps!
Don't believe that Alani "LaLa" Vazquez is out of sight and out of mind, because she's busy making her own power moves. The former "TRL" cohost is concentrating on her film career as a burgeoning actress and producer.
LaLa has teamed with 51 Minds Entertainment, the production crew behind VH1's guilty pleasure programming such as "I Love New York" and "Flavor of Love" to produce "The Sixth Man." The cable network's basketball-themed reality show will bring together aspiring ballers to cohabitate and compete for a chance to go pro domestically or internationally with the help of a sports agent. The show is expected to hit the tube sometime next year.
"People always say the best basketball players aren't in the leagues," explains LaLa, who will serve as the show's executive producer. "So we set out to go to small towns and different cities to find these men who have different circumstances that might have prevented them from pursuing a basketball career."
